Youth With Crown Ward Status Encouraged by Education Opportunities

The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of the District of Nipissing and Parry Sound in partnership with Canadore College, Nipissing University and local Boards of Education hosted an event February 9th and 10th in North Bay to encourage youth with Crown Ward status to realize their educational potential and the option of attending postsecondary .

The event attracted over 100 area youth with Crown Ward status offering information and support through the transition of becoming an independent. Sessions included world-wide motivational speaker Dave “Jaegar” Jones and his empowering presentation on self-confidence, communication, assertiveness and living a happy life.

Representatives from various associated organizations were in attendance as well as members of the Nipissing and Parry Sound Crown Ward Education Championship Team which work to bring together educational opportunities for youth with Crown Ward status and youth in care.

The Nipissing and Parry Sound Crown Ward Education Championship Team include: Big Brothers Big Sisters North Bay, Canadore College, Child Services of Muskoka, Family Youth and Child Services of Muskoka, Georgian College, Hands The FamilyHelpNetwork.ca, Near North District School Board, Nipissing-Parry Sound Catholic District School Board, Nipissing and Parry Sound Children’s Aid Society, Nipissing University, Trillium Lakelands District School Board, and Yes! This event was a tremendous success and was well attended by area youth. “This event showcases the true collaboration and effort that our community organizations put forward to ensure our area youth have every opportunity to excel through education. The transition from Crown Ward status to independence can often be a challenging one for these youth and having these supports and opportunities in place is crucial to their success” said Gisèle Hébert, MSW, RSW Executive Director /Children's Aid Society of the District of Nipissing and Parry Sound.
